When will we meet?
This class will meet via Zoom on Monday evenings January 6 through February 3, 2025 from 7:00-9:30 p.m. EST. We will not meet on January 20.
What will we learn?
Actors will choose a Shakespeare monologue to work on for the duration of the class. We'll begin with table work, mining each scene for acting opportunities encoded in the text. We'll look at meter, rhetoric, verse structure, and more. We'll move from there into a deeper exploration of the monologue, investigating given circumstances, action, and all of the moment-to-moment discoveries uncovered during text work. Observers will witness this work from start to finish, gaining insight into the actor's process and the decisions that go into Shakespearean monologue work. Observers will be invited to share their insights during every session. Our final class will include an invitational in which Observers may share a monologue of their own.
Should I register as an Actor or as an Observer?
This class has space for six actors and an unlimited number of observers.
Register as an Actor if you:
- Are ready to take a deep dive into a Shakespeare monologue of your choosing with input and guidance from your facilitator. No prior acting experience necessary.
- Are available for all class sessions.
Register as an Observer if you:
- Love Shakespeare but prefer to discuss or watch rather than act.
- Want to develop a new monologue but cannot commit to attend every session.
- Want to gain insight into the process of acting and staging Shakespeare.
